A bipartisan group of two dozen members of Congress have written a letter to the U.S. Treasury Department asking for sanctions on Turkey and Qatar, supposedly two U.S. “allies,” for their support of Hamas and other Islamist terrorists (Click here to see a copy of the letter).

“Any entity or nation that continues to back this U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization [Hamas] and provides it material and financial support should be sanctioned…We also request specific public updates on Treasury’s discussions with the Qatari government on previously designated, Qatar-based terrorist financiers that the Qataris have yet to act upon,” the letter requests.

(CNN) -- Embarrassment for allies, ammunition for enemies -- but no recommendations laid down for the future treatment of alleged terrorists taken prisoner. It would seem that publication by the Senate Intelligence Committee (or at least its Democrats) of its report into the torture of detainees just brought a heap of trouble.

The Isis militant group has released what appears to be an “abhorrent” pamphlet providing its followers with guidelines on how to capture, keep and sexually abuse female slaves.

Published before the CIA report into the “enhanced interrogation” of suspected militant detainees, it specifically rules out the use of torture.

The news tells us less about Israel than about the people writing the news, a former AP reporter says.

MATTI FRIEDMAN

During the Gaza war this summer, it became clear that one of the most important aspects of the media-saturated conflict between Jews and Arabs is also the least covered: the press itself. The Western press has become less an observer of this conflict than an actor in it, a role with consequences for the millions of people trying to comprehend current events, including policymakers who depend on journalistic accounts to understand a region where they consistently seek, and fail, to productively intervene.

Kobani, Syria (CNN) -- When violence swallows a city as wholly as it has Kobani, as in so many of Syria's mottled cities, the fight becomes about who wins, rather than what is left for the victor.

(CNN) -- The U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS in Syria has stepped up its attacks on the militant Islamist group's de facto capital, with 30 airstrikes targeting Raqqa overnight, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Sunday.

Separately, another opposition activist group based in Raqqa reported that about 30 airstrikes by "the crusader alliance" targeted areas northwest of the city.

The FBI issued a warning Sunday to members of the U.S. military that ISIS is calling for attacks against them, according to a law enforcement source, saying that "overseas based individuals are looking for like-minded individuals in the US to carry out these attacks."

"We also request members of the military review their online social media presence for any information that might attract the attention of violent extremists," the bulletin said, advising that members of the military "use caution and practice operational security when posting."

The FBI also issued a security bulletin in October warning of similar attacks on U.S. soil against law enforcement personnel and members of the news media.

A new report claims terrorists are plotting to blow up five jets bound for European cities before Christmas, in what one analyst said is a sign Al Qaeda is competing with the Islamic State for influence.

Britain's Sunday Express newspaper reported that, according to unnamed security experts, Al Qaeda terrorists are plotting a Christmas "spectacular." The threat reportedly is taken seriously enough that it led officials to consider banning hand luggage.

(CNN) -- The busiest shopping day of the year also saw a major boom for gun sales, with the federal background check system expected to set a record of more than 144,000 background checks Friday, according to the FBI.

The staggering number of checks -- an average of almost three per second, nearly three times the daily average -- falls on the shoulders of 600 FBI and contract call center employees who will endure 17-hour workdays in an attempt to complete the background reviews in three business days, as required by law, FBI spokesman Stephen Fischer said.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon announced Friday that he will call a special session of the state's General Assembly to ensure funding for ongoing operations of the National Guard and State Highway Patrol in the Ferguson area.

Nixon said current financial obligations are expected to exceed the amount set aside for their presence efforts related to protests.

Protests have been ongoing since a grand jury's recent decision not to indict the police officer who fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown in August.

Islamic jihadists worldwide have launched a barrage of recruitment messages amid the latest unrest in Ferguson, Mo., using Twitter accounts to call on African-Americans and others in the United States to join their cause.

Some messages urge direct revolt against the U.S. government, while others evoke the names of former black leaders – among them Malcolm X – in a bid to convince people of color that living under an Islamic caliphate is in their best interests.
