Chinese hackers are suspected to be behind the attack, the Washington Post reported.

The cyberattack, discovered in mid-September, did not include customer credit card information from its retail locations or online purchases.

The Postal Service does, however, say the intrusion compromised call center data for customers who contacted the Postal Service's customer care center via email or telephone between Jan. 1 and Aug. 16.

Compromised employee information may have included names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, addresses, employment dates and emergency contact information.
