Mike Roche is one of our speakers at this year's Homeland Security Conference

Read Mike's thoughts, below, on the motivation of mass killers.

One of the primary motivations of mass killers is to attach some significance to their meaningless life. In essence, they desire notoriety as they use the platform of social media and the news media to project their message to the world. Written journals from the Columbine killers provided an insight into the mindset of these killers, but video messages left by the Virginia Tech mass killer and most recently the Santa Barbara killing spree have garnered considerable traction. Elliott Roger’s “Retribution” video targeting the Santa Barbara community has garnered over 3 million views. This for an individual who believed that no one noticed him and wanted to exact revenge on a cruel world. His name and life will be forever engraved on YouTube and Wikipedia like a tombstone in a cemetery.
