Hackers attacked Sony Pictures Entertainment's electronic systems earlier this week, and the studio is now investigating whether the culprits may have ties to North Korea.

On Nov. 24, Sony's company computers suddenly showed an image of a skeleton with a message that said, "Hacked by #GOP," which the hackers said stood for "Guardians of Peace." Analysis of the group's text shows that it was encoded in a format that is compatible with Chinese and Korean characters, although experts say hackers often use different formats to throw off authorities.

Sony is releasing The Interview, a film starring James Franco and Seth Rogen, in which the two are asked by the CIA to assassinate North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. There has been speculation as to whether the attack was retaliation against the upcoming movie.

Sony issued a statement concerning the network breach, curtly saying the company is investigating the "IT matter."

The firm has experience with security issues in the past. Sony's PlayStation network suffered a catastrophic breach in 2011 that resulted in the leak of personal information belonging to over 77 million users and cost the company over $15 million in compensation claims. Earlier this year, the electronics giant was hit by a DDoS attack, and threats to the president of Sony's Online Entertainment division, John Smedley, forced the executive's plane to be grounded.
