Violent crimes down 4.4 percent in U.S. in 2013

WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Violent crime in the United States decreased 4.4 percent in 2013 compared to 2012, a report released Tuesday by the FBI said.

The report, based on information submitted by 18,415 law enforcement agencies, found there were an estimated 1,163,146 violent crimes in 2013. There were 8,632,512 property crimes, down 4.1 percent from 2012.


The largest percentage of violent crimes in 2013 were aggravated assaults, which accounted for 62.3 percent of all violent crime arrests. There were an estimated 14,196 murders and 79,770 rapes. 

In property crimes, there were an estimated 699,594 motor vehicles reported stolen and 1,231,580 larceny thefts.


An average of $3,542 was stolen during some 6,500 bank robberies.
