Miami - the Homeland Security Capitol of America
AHURA First DefenderWhile 500 representatives of the Federal Government's Program to combat terrorism, controlling upwards of $1.7 billion in funding met in Miami, Security Solutions Int ternational was the hit of the conference providing a a two hour presentation on Suicide Terror that many said was the finest presentation they had ever heard on the subject. In addition, SSI put on the renowed ORMAC program and there are already bookings for many cities as a result. But the real hit of the SSI booth was the AHURA First Defender Chemical detection system which is now being considered for purchase by a number of UASI areas.

Riders take bag inspections in stride, glad for the security
by William Kates - AP
Train SecuritySYRACUSE, N.Y. Sleepy-eyed train passengers said it was comforting to see federal inspectors checking baggage for explosives as the government began a new security initiative at upstate New York rail stations on Friday. "We travel Amtrak all the time, and I've always been uneasy because there's really not a lot of security," said Kathy Couteure of Fulton, N.Y., who was heading to Florida with her husband...

Anti-globalists reach out to Islamists
by Eric Walberg - Al-Ahram Weekly
Anti-globalists reach out to IslamistsWhat is striking about this latest conference is the growing cooperation both within the Muslim world and between the anti-global left and Muslims. This should come as no surprise, considering the traditional focus of the left on defending victims of torture. Who are the biggest victims of torture in the world today? Of course, Muslims, primarily in Iraq and Palestine, but everywhere in the West, and just about in every country that is predominantly Muslim...

Fighting for the Soul of Islam
by Jay Tolson - US News and World Report
MoonstarAmericans have heard it repeatedly since September 11: The acts of terrorism inflicted on our shore were the murderous consequences of an ongoing struggle within Islam. At its most dramatic extremes, that conflict pits radical jihadists against moderate Muslims. But a quieter front in the struggle is probably of greater import...

FDNY'S Post-9/11 Training Regimen
by Stephanie Gaskell - New York Post
NYFD FiremanGone are the days when probies spent six weeks at the academy learning how to put out a fire and knock down doors. Today's department trains for nearly six months, with prospective firefighters studying weapons of mass destruction, subway evacuation, treating mass casualties - even spotting child abuse.
"Since 9/11, we've taken on a different face and a different job, so we have to increase their training and give them different knowledge of what's going on," said Lt. Jim Brennan, who helped create the curriculum now being taught on Randalls Island...

Did the FBI Flub a Major Terror Investigation?
by Vic Walter and Justin Rood - ABC News
FBI EmblemFBI agents downplayed evidence of burgeoning cooperation between a domestic white supremacist group and an Islamic terrorist supporter, documents reviewed by ABC News show. By curtailing its undercover investigation of the two groups, the bureau lost a "golden opportunity" to infiltrate a potentially deadly union between two violent radical organizations, according to a former FBI agent involved with the case...
