The War on Terror is not a Crime
By David B. Rivkin Jr. and Lee A. Kasey

US Supreme Court Seal

Lynching lawyers, as Shakespeare once suggested, has never appealed much to the legal profession itself - literally or figuratively. But an exception apparently will be made for a group of attorneys who advised President Bush and his national security staff in the aftermath of 9/11. They've been subject to an increasingly determined campaign of public obloquy by law professors, activist lawyers and pundits.

Their legal competence and ethics have been questioned. Suggestions have even been made that they can and should be held criminally responsible for "war crimes," because their legal advice supposedly led to detainee abuses at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere.

Catastrophic Nuke Terrorism 'Inevitable', Say Experts

By Evan Moore

Should a major metropolitan area suffer a nuclear attack, the consequent catastrophe would overwhelm America's ability to respond, and kill thousands from the heat, blast, and radiation of the detonating weapon. Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) agrees that such an attack would be devastating, but says deterrence can work by threatening retaliation against the states that produced the weapon.

Clifford May, president of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a conservative group, told Cybercast News Service that "the ramifications" of a nuclear attack on a major metropolitan area in the United States "would be catastrophic. Should an American city be wiped out, the death toll in the next terrorist attack would rise from 3,000 to 100,000."

"America would survive as a nation," he said, "but it would never again be the same."

The Homeland Security Bulletin Of Open Source Threats HS BOOST

SSI is taking orders from Intelligence agencies around the country for its brand-new workshop, Jihad 2.0 from Virtual to Physical. The workshop, created by Gadi Aviran, the founder of Terrogence, the content providers for SSI's new monthly Intelligence Subscription service HS Boost has already been ordered in Florida, Boston, Denver, Anaheim and many more cities. The workshop increases awareness of the entire Terror threat life cycle without undue focus on any one aspect or modus operandi. This gives Homeland Security an advantage in understanding phenomena like Suicide Terror which far too often are treated as independant threats.

The last Intelligence bulletin drew attention to the threat to US railways, and indeed there was an incident this month in Virginia. Anyone that is a bona fide member of an intelligence service that would like to receive a copy of the pilot should contact Henry Morgenstern 305.401.6906 (cell).

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. - One of the most experienced interrogators in the Defense Department looked straight into Ahmed's eyes and asked him for the third time: "Ahmed, what insurgent organization do you belong to?"

Sitting in the room with no windows, Ahmed refused to answer the interrogator's questions. He was stoic - similar to many al Qaeda insurgents the interrogator had questioned at the detention center at the U.S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

But, this time, things were different.

Ahmed, who uses an alias, was practicing as an advanced interrogation student at Fort Huachuca, the nation's largest intelligence-training facility and the home of the Defense Department's war on terror.

Killing Researchers is "Morally Acceptable," Says Popular Animal Rights Activist
Dr. VlasakBy Brian Mullahy

A controversial animal rights activist spoke in a conference in Salt Lake City, Saturday. 2NEWS' Brian Mullahy spoke with the Doctor who had some startling words about methods used for the cause of animal liberation.

Dr. Vlasak is a trauma surgeon in Southern California. And to him, all forms of life are precious.

"I save lives everyday at the hospital. Everyday, I go to the hospital, I save lives," says Dr. Vlasak.

But the doctor feels that if necessary, it's morally acceptable to take human lives, if it saves the lives of many animals. Years ago, Vlasak was quoted as saying, "I don't think you'd have to kill -assasinate- too many. I think for five lives, ten lives, fifteen human lives, we could save one million, two million maybe ten million non-human lives."

After Web Defacement, University Warns of Data Breach
SCSUBy Robert McMillan

Two weeks after discovering that its Web site had been used by hackers to flog fancy wedding rings, Southern Connecticut State University is notifying 11,000 current and former students that their Social Security numbers may have been compromised.

The personal data was in a file on the university's Web server, which was accessed by criminals who were using the university's site as part of a spam operation, said Patrick Dilger, the university's director of public affairs. "The hackers were using our Web server as a host for their own Web site," he said.

Pages on the university's site contained ads for diamond rings, Viagra and Cialis. After noticing the ads on April 9th, IT staff discovered the file containing the sensitive information. "When we were doing the security review after the hacker incident, we saw this file there and it wasn't properly secured, so it could have been targeted by someone," Dilger said.

NSA to Stage Cyber Battle
National Security Agency By Alice Lipowicz

A cyber "blue team" of military service students will defend simulated government computer networks against a "red team" of National Security Agency hackers in a Cyber Defense Exercise this week.

The annual war game exercise is being staged in Lockheed Martin Corp.'s facility in Elkridge, Md., the company said in a news release. Lockheed Martin also will provide computer network support and technical support for the project.

"Cyber security is an area of rapidly growing importance, and this exercise will help test out strategies, tactics and technology for defending against increasingly complex attacks on our networks," Bob Eastman, vice president of information systems for Lockheed Martin, said in the release.

During the exercise, teams from the Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, Naval Academy and West Point service academies will set up computer networks with layered cyber defenses.

The Red Team of NSA computer experts will attempt to attack those networks, and a "white team" keeps score by tracking activities on both sides.

Bombing Verdict Upheld Against Port Authority
World Ttrade VictimBy John Sullivan

JA New York State appeals court on Tuesday upheld a jury's verdict that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was negligent in safeguarding World Trade Center before a 1993 terrorist attack that killed six people and injured 1,000.

The ruling could prove costly for the Port Authority. Damages have not yet been determined, but lawyers for roughly 50 plaintiffs remaining in the case estimated the potential total amount at over $50 million.

"This is a very significant decision," said David Dean, one of the lawyers for the plaintiffs. "This is a vindication of the jury's verdict."

A jury in State Supreme Court in Manhattan found in 2005 that the Port Authority failed to heed warnings that the trade center's underground parking garage was vulnerable to an attack and should be closed. Islamic militants detonated explosives in a van parked in the garage on Feb. 26, 1993.

TSA Wants Software Tool to Assess Transport Risks
Transport RisksBy Jacob Goodwin

The Transportation Security Administration is planning to procure commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software that would enable the agency to assess the terrorist risks and vulnerabilities affecting various modes of transportation in the U.S., including bus, rail, trucks and general aviation.

"The tool will assist in prioritization of security measures based on their risk reduction potential," said the statement of work accompanying TSA's formal solicitation, which was posted April 18.

The software tool would help TSA gather and organize information about specific transport modes and assist agency officials to make risk management decisions.

The contract, which will be issued by TSA's office of operational process and technology, envisions a one-year base period plus four one-year options. The chosen vendor will be expected to install the software, troubleshoot any hardware or software problems, consult on building risk assessment modules, attend classified intelligence meetings at TSA headquarters and maintain the software.
