House Passes Bill to Reduce Terror Threat Information
By Associated Press
The legislation would require the Homeland Security Department to produce a declassified version of threat information for state and local first responders who don't have the security clearance to view classified material. WASHINGTON -- Terrorists could be lurking in some American town but the local sheriff or fire chief might be left in the dark about the threat because he can't easily access information classified by the Feds in Washington.
That scenario could change under legislation passed by the House Tuesday to reduce over-classification of threat information.
"Classifying information for the wrong reasons -- to protect turf or to avoid embarrassment -- is wrong," said Rep. Jane Harman, D-Calif., sponsor of the bill that passed on a voice vote. She said that in her eight years on the House Intelligence committee, "I become incredibly frustrated with this practice -- which the Bush administration elevated to an art form."

HCl Accidentally Added to OH Water System
BELLAIRE, OH - Water system employees discovered on February 2 that 40 pounds of hydrochloric acid (HCl) was added accidentally to this village's water supply, according to a February 3 Associated Press report.
According to Water Department Superintendent Kirk Baker, a supplier shipped the wrong chemical to the plant, and then crew mistook the containers for fluoride. Employees discovered the error after noticing that fluoride levels were lower than normal.
"Unfortunately, the drums are all the same size and the same color," Baker is quoted as saying.
Flushing was then performed on the system, which supplies water to 2,400 residents in this community about 120 miles east of Columbus and across the Ohio River from Wheeling, WV. Water service returned to normal on February 3, and no illnesses were reported, the report said.

Security Solutions International (SSI), the Miami-based Homeland Security leader has been chosen to provide the training in Miami Dade county and will soon be taking the course around the country to other highly populated areas.
"We are proud to be training Miami-Dade county, a very proactive area when it comes to Homeland Security," states Henry Morgenstern, SSI President. "Our Operational Response to Mass Casualty Program (http://www.homelandsecurityssi.com/ssi/content/view/193/160/), known as ORMAC is unique, providing hands-on experience in dealing with mass casualty situations and has already been approved for delivery across the country by the DHS. Cities are already ordering the program and it will prove invaluable in either man-made or natural disasters. Our hope is that we can make a modest contribution to saving lives."

Tornado Hit Colleyville Neighborhood during Tuesday Storms
From staff and wire reports
The National Weather Service confirmed today that a tornado with gusts of 90 mph touched down in Colleyville during severe storms that walloped North Texas on Tuesday.
The tornado, which formed about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, was about 100 yards wide and traveled about half a mile, said Jennifer Dunn, a weather service meteorologist.
The tornado knocked down trees and tore roofs off homes in the 7000 block of Primrose Lane. No injuries were reported.
Gene Drautz said he and his wife were getting ready for bed when the storms hit. "We heard a loud thud - kind of like an airplane hit the house and that's when I guess the tornado come through and hit the roof. I jumped out of bed and pushed my wife into the bathroom so we could escape."

Raytheon Offers Airborne Radar for India's Homeland Security
Bangalore: With India going into overdrive to secure its coastline in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, US defence major Raytheon is positioning its airborne standoff radar (ASTOR) as the ideal solution for the country's homeland security.
"This may be something of interest to India. There's a lot of opportunity here," Mike Henchey, Raytheon's Vice President for space and airborne systems, said.
Pointing to the success achieved by the British defence ministry in operating the system, Henchey, who is here for Aero India-2009 that opened today, said he hoped to discuss its benefits with Indian officials during the five-day international air show.
The ASTOR system, Raytheon says, provides a highly effective 24-hour surveillance and target acquisition capability. It delivers wide area, all weather surveillance and reconnaissance imagery in near real time for peacekeeping, war fighting and homeland security needs.

The scope of this training is to teach SWAT team members how to conduct an operation with the special characteristics peculiar to terrorist incidents and accomplish the mission, whether there are hostages involved, IED's, booby traps, or suicide terrorists with maximum safety for: citizens, team members and surrounding assets. By nature, the operation may become more similar to a military operation because, as mentioned above, this is a criminal act with a strategic goal. It is part of an ideological struggle against a state or population and may be carried out by a professional team of well equipped terrorist subjects.

Homeland Security Chief Visits Storm-Weary Kentucky
Associated Press
WEST PADUCAH, Ky. - U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Tuesday the federal government would deviate from normal practice and reimburse Kentucky for 75 percent of the cost of activating its National Guard in last month's crippling winter storm.
At a news conference in Frankfort, Napolitano called the storm that began Jan. 27 Kentucky's worst in more than a century, blanketing the region with snow and ice and knocking out power to about 769,000 customers.
"Normally the National Guard is a state responsibility and governors assume that and budget for it and that's the way it is," Napolitano said. "But this situation was so broad and so unique - and the need for the Guard to get out there and do those door-to-door wellness checks, particularly in the western parts of the state, are such that I feel it necessary to create an exception."
Napolitano planned to head from Kentucky to Kansas and Iowa on her first trip as head of homeland security.

Urging the Defenders of Free Speech to Sign This Letter of Protest against the Dutch Government. Defend Geert Wilders and Freedom of Speech!
The International Free Press Society was established on January 1, 2009, with the Danish scholar Lars Hedegaard and the intrepid Diana West as Vice President. You can read its policy statement here. The Board of Advisors includes Asger Aamund, Bat Ye'or, Stephen Coughlin, Rachel Ehrenfeld, David Harris, Ole Hasselbalch, Hans Jansen, Ehsan Jami, Ibn Warraq, Philippe Karsenty, Roger Kimball, Ezra Levant, Andrew C. McCarthy, Nidra Poller, Kathy Shaidle, Roger Scruton, Mark Steyn, Allen West, Geert Wilders and me.
Here is a press release from The International Free Press Society about the Wilders prosecution: January 22, 2009 - Washington, DC and Copenhagen, Denmark: A Dutch court yesterday ordered the criminal prosecution of Geert Wilders, Dutch parliamentarian and leader of the Freedom Party (PV V), for his statements - written, spoken and filmed -regarding Islam. The Amsterdam Court of Appeals has deemed such statements "insulting," declaring that they "substantially harm the religious esteem" of Muslims.
Clearly, the effect of this Dutch court order is to set new limits to public debate in Dutch society, in this case about the highly controversial but nonetheless crucially important subject of Islam. This makes the prosecution of Geert Wilders an unacceptable breach of the sanctity of freedom of speech in Western society. Having ordered a criminal prosecution for the opinions of a duly elected leader of a legitimate political party, Dutch authorities have dealt a devastating blow to political expression.
While Dutch prosecutors prepare their indictment and Geert Wilders' future hangs in limbo, who in The Netherlands will dare discuss political and cultural matters related to Islam - Islamic law, Islamic integration, Islamic crime, Islamic policy - openly, freely and fearlessly? The chilling effect is instantaneous. If, indeed, Wilders is ultimately convicted, free speech will cease to exist in the heart of Europe.
The International Free Press Society believes this court-ordered prosecution against Geert Wilders, a central figure in the fight against the Islamization of the West, amounts to a dangerous concession to the strictures of Islamic law, which prohibits all criticism of Islam, over Western traditions of, and rights to robust and unfettered debate. As such, it is tantamount to a surrender to totalitarian influences that undermine all Western freedoms. And as such, it must be resisted.
It is important to recall recent history. Two Dutchmen, Pim Fortuyn and Theo van Gogh, have been murdered for their outspoken opposition to Islamization in The Netherlands. Another Dutch politician, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, has been infamously forced into exile. Wilders alone now carries this debate over Islam in Dutch society forward - forcefully but logically, outspokenly but reasonably, and always peacefully. In order to do so, this member of Dutch parliament lives in a virtual prison, consigned to 24-hour guard by Islamic death threats against his life. Now, Dutch authorities have ordered him to be prosecuted for the Orwellian crime of committing "insulting" words.
As Wilders puts it, "If I have to stand trial, I will not stand trial alone, but also with the hundreds of thousands of Dutch people who reject the Islamization of The Netherlands." He will also stand trial with those in The Netherlands and beyond who reject government prosecutions of free speech. In recognition of this this dire situation, the IFPS immediately calls on every supporter of free speech to come to the aid of Geert Wilders. To assist in this effort, the IFPS has launched an international campaign in defense of Geert Wilders and his freedom of speech.
To support these efforts, we urge you to contribute to the Geert Wilders Defense Fund. Donation information can be found at the IFPS website. We also urge defenders of free speech to sign this letter of protest against the Dutch Government:
